What is a Facebook Memorial Page?

The loss of a family member or friend is devastating. So, what is a Facebook memorial page? Read on to find out.A lifetime of memories live on in photos and letters, but in technical times these are likely to be in digital as well as physical form. Social media allows us to quickly and easily share memories the moment we make them, and these memories can be a comfort during the grieving process.

Facebook Memorial Page

A Facebook memorial page changes the Facebook page of a deceased person into a page for remembering them. It will change the name to show ‘Remembering’ and then the name to ensure anyone viewing the page knows they are deceased. Anyone with access to the account can make this change and create a Facebook memorial page.

Step-by-Step Guide

Access the Facebook account and go to settings and memorialisation settings. You will find lots of helpful information about the process, along with FAQs. Either choose or become a legacy contact. Legacy contacts act as page administrators in the event of the owner’s death. It is down to them to update the page accordingly, letting people know the news and providing a place for memories, photos and tributes. It may also involve funeral details and links to appropriate fundraisers and charities.

The next thing to do is to clean up the Facebook account. This means deleting posts or photos you feel should not be there, editing personal details, updating information, and ensuring all is in order. You may also wish to reply to any messages from people who may not know about the death. Usually, a post informing everyone of the situation would be written and pinned.

Deleting a Facebook Account After Death

If you know the deceased would not want a memorial page, you can also delete their account. To do this, contact Facebook to inform them of the death, stating your relationship to the person and proving you have the authority to handle their account. You can then request that they delete it if you are unable to access it and do so yourself. You can always create a different type of memorial or tribute page of your own dedicated to the deceased.

Social media plays a significant role in our lives, and it is best to give some thought to what you want doing with yours when the time comes.
